Join CAKE and Spudnik for Free Comic Book Day!
This Saturday, May 2, is Free Comic Book Day, and CAKE and Spudnik Press invite you to join us for a drop-in comics workshop! The event will be taking place at the Spudnik Press Cooperative, located at 1821 W Hubbard, Suite 302, in Chicago, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.For a suggested donation of $10, you can join the workshop, which is open to all people of all ages, identities, and experience levels. You'll be able to make your own “Comics Handbook” using templates and drawing prompts provided by Spudnik and CAKE, along with a lavish selection of papers and Spudnik's resident photocopier. Select the prompts that strike your fancy, pick out papers that inspire you to draw, and design your own cover. Then bring these elements together with a spiral binding, staples, or hand-sewn butterfly stitch, and trim to any dimension you like with Spudnik's fun and friendly electric guillotine.Attendees will also get to collaborate with friends and strangers to create a one-page jam comic, using all sorts of mark making implements (pencil, pens, ink, and more). Then learn how to reproduce this work using a Risograph machine, one of the many unique tools housed at Spudnik Press Cooperative. Everyone who contributes will get to take home a limited-edition jam comic. While you're there, be sure to pick up the Free Comic Book Day comic created by CAKE's organizers! This is a drop-in, all-ages donation-based workshop. Proceeds to benefit CAKE and Spudnik. No RSVP required. We hope to see you this Saturday! If you have any questions, please contact us.
